Mechanism of the Cathedral Clock

Removed in 1973. Made by Handly and Moore in 1808. The Clockwork was operated by two weights which hung down the whole length of the tower and required to be wound up – a long wind – once a week.

Records survive of the two earlier generations of Cathedral clocks. One of these was damaged by the Earl of Montrose’s forces in 1645.
