The Provost’s Lamp Post
It used to be that towns and cities were run by their own locally elected councils. The head of the council was known as the Provost or, in the case of cities, the Lord Provost.
It was customary to have a very ornate lamp post situated outside the Provost’s home. The one used in Brechin is now in the kirkyard, to the right of the path leading to the Cathedral entrance.
